Earth Day Alert!

Advocating for nature at the Outsider Art Fair & NYPL

In February and March, Margaret Bodell of Revival Arts exhibited my project “Earth Day Alert!” at the Outsider Art Fair. Margaret and I are aligned on the importance of nature and art as a form of activism and have worked together many times over the years.

Pulitzer Prize-winning art critic Jerry Saltz gave the fair high praise: "For my money, the Outsider Art Fair is the best art fair in the world." The OAF is the only fair dedicated to showcasing self-taught art, art brut, and outsider art. To me, it’s a great place to speak from the heart, using the healing power of creativity to engage others in the importance of caring for one another and the planet.

Revival Arts presents Earth Day Alert! showcasing the work of self-taught artists who bring awareness to growing environmental issues and the mystical inspiration of the natural world. Earth Day Alert! showcases environmental activism using art as its anthem of awareness and change.

From the early work of renowned artist William Kent (1919-2012) to current initiatives by kHyal, climate change landscapes by Dorothy Hershman, and nature-inspired clay board carvings of Peter Wickenden. Earth Day Alert will travel to The New York Public Library at Tompkins Square on Saturday, April 19, from 1–3 pm, featuring poetry, presentations, and mini theatrical works.

kHyal, an environmental activist and digital art pioneer, has been working with recycled materials since the early 1980s. Her totemic sculptures, crafted from reclaimed plastic castoffs, are both beautiful and terrifying—a wake-up call to action. Her current projects include "The Sound of Plastic," addressing ocean pollution and horseshoe crab protection along Long Island Sound; the world's only "Plastic Horse Rescue," rehoming discarded plastic horses, ponies, and unicorns; and "Toy Ocean: Out to See," exploring the intersection of our relationship with material objects and the waste stream. A Certified Climate Reality Leader and Beyond Plastics advocate, kHyal conducts horseshoe crab conservation as a citizen scientist in Connecticut coastal areas. Recently accepted into NYC's Sanitation Department's Trash Academy, her work spans art, education, and activism to catalyze environmental change.
